FAPAS lança novo livro: ÁRVORES DO PARQUE NACIONAL DA PENEDA-GERÊS

No ano do 40º aniversário do Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, também o Ano Internacional das Florestas, o FAPAS acaba de editar o livro ÁRVORES DOPARQUE NACIONAL DA PENEDA-GERÊS, da autoria de Miguel Dantas da Gama.

Idealizado para ser mais do que um guia sobre as árvores autóctones do único parque nacional português (inclui anotações históricas, dados de distribuição, fichas técnicas e de identificação), são nesta obra retratados os exemplares que, pela sua idade, porte e maior raridade, se encontram entre os mais representativos da vegetação arbórea desta área protegida. A descrição das mais de 30 espécies nativas é antecedida por uma introdução sobre bosques naturais em que elas ocorrem, nomeadamente os carvalhais. ÁRVORES DO PARQUE NACIONAL DA PENEDA-GERÊS é também um contributo para a preservação da vida selvagem deste espaço natural, na medida em que valoriza verdadeiros ícones vivos do seu património, alertando por outro lado, paraos efeitos dos fogos sobre exemplares tão valiosos como são alguns teixos e azevinhos.

No próximo dia 8 de Julho, pelas 18h00, no Palmário do Jardim Botânico, será apresentado o livro:

A apresentação da obra ficará a cargo da Vice-Reitora da Universidade de Lisboa, Profª Doutora Maria Amélia Martins-Loução e da Arqª Cristina Castel-Branco. Esta publicação conta com o apoio financeiro da Liga dos Amigos do Jardim Botânico (LAJB).

Após a apresentação do livro, segue-se a inauguração de um objecto vivo tornado arte, apresentado pela Profª Virgínia Fróis.

Botânica das Lágrimas

Temos o maior prazer em comunicar que o último livro do nosso estimado associado Pedro Foyos, “Botânica das Lágrimas” (Editorial Hespéria), já está disponível nas principais livrarias.

Este novo romance poderá suscitar na comunidade da LAJB especial interesse na medida em que toda a acção decorre precisamente no nosso Jardim Botânico (designado no enredo por Jardim da Sétima Colina). Embora se trate de um livro de ficção, protagonizado por crianças (mas para adultos), a história do próprio Jardim insinua-se no decurso de uma narrativa que procura ainda prestar homenagem a vultos portugueses da botânica.

E por duas vezes é citado no livro, muito gratamente, a Liga dos Amigos do Jardim Botânico. Muito obrigado Pedro Foyos.

AFTER THE CAR

Dois docentes da Universidade de Lancaster, no Reino Unido, publicaram em Maio este interessante estudo sobre o fim da sociedade centrada no carro. Um livro que aconselhamos a todos os autarcas do nosso país!

It is difficult to imagine a world without the car, and yet that is exactly what Dennis and Urry set out to do in this provocative new book. They argue that the days of the car are numbered: powerful forces around the world are undermining the car system and will usher in a new transport system sometime in the next few decades. Specifically, the book examines how several major processes are shaping the future of how we travel, including:

• Global warming and its many global consequences
• Peaking of oil supplies
• Increased digitisation of many aspects of economic and social life
• Massive global population increases

The authors look at changes in technology, policy, economy and society, and make a convincing argument for a future where, by necessity, the present car system will be re-designed and re-engineered.

Yet the book also suggests that there are some hugely bleak dilemmas facing the twenty first century. The authors lay out what they consider to be possible 'post-car' future scenarios. These they describe as 'local sustainability', 'regional warlordism' and 'digital networks of control'.

After The Car will be of great interest to planners, policy makers, social scientists, futurologists, those working in industry, as well as general readers.

Some have described the 20th Century as the century of the car. Now that century has come to a close - and things are about to change.
